Life Saving Chaplaincy Australia

We are Life Saving Chaplaincy Australia

About Life Saving Chaplaincy Australia

Our Chaplaincy, founded by Terry Legg in 1995, aims to serve all life savers and their families in Australia, and is unique in the world: Surf Life Saving Australia was the first sports governing body to endorse Chaplaincy at the 1998 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, by the then SLSA President, Alan Whelpton AO.

By doing so it created a model that is today enjoyed by a large number of sporting organizations across the nation from Australian Football League to the Australian Institute of Sport and including sports such as racing, rugby league, basketball, horse racing, cricket and tennis.

Life Saving Chaplaincy Australia operates in association with Sports Chaplaincy Australia (SCA). We have a National Operations Board Charter and we are authorized by lifesaving bodies to provide chaplaincy to life saving clubs

The Life Saving Chaplaincy Australia National Operations Board was formed at the beginning of 2011 with its inaugural meeting taking place on Friday 8th April 2011.

The board consisted of 6 founding members: (pictured below)

Our Goal

To enrich the lives of all people involved in lifesaving throughout Australia by demonstrating Christ’s love and hope to them. We achieve this by training dedicated men and women to provide pastoral care to local clubs and high performance sports communities.

Our Commitment

We ensure our chaplains are:

  • Authentic in motivation and service
  • Respectful of all persons
  • Non-judgemental
  • Confidential
  • Caring
  • Always respectful guests
  • There to serve
  • Considerate
  • Trained in sports pastoral care

Our Promise to Help You

Our chaplains are authentic Christian people with a genuine love for Jesus Christ, and they serve any person of any faith or worldview. In fact, after 30 years of service to sports in Australia (including the AFL, NRL, V8s, etc) that’s what we’ve discovered makes an outstanding sports chaplain. Our chaplains serve under a common statement of faith as outlined in our SCA Professional Code of Conduct.

How Lifesaving Chaplains Fit into Your Club

Many people ask, “Why do we need a chaplain?” or “Where does a chaplain fit in a club?” Apart from primarily providing ‘Pastoral Care’, our chaplains also provide:

  • Clubs with a sustainable care strategy
  • A club with a ‘safe’ person you can confide in
  • A caring person for those in distress
  • Help to clubs or individuals to navigate grief and loss
  • Someone to help you build a healthy and strong community
